Many period bungalows and historic Tudor houses are now joined by modern Craftsman and Contemporary homes in Virginia Highland. Craftsman along the old trolley run and Colonial Revival, English Cottage, American Four square, and English Vernacular Revival styles are also in the neighborhood. Most of the neighborhood was constructed between 1909 in 1926.

There are subdivisions within the neighborhood. For example, Virginia Highlands subdivision is on the south side of town. The 1890s Highland Park subdivision straddles Ponce de Leon Avenue. A high percentage of the homes have 4 to 6 bedrooms and 1500-4500 square feet of living area. Prices for Virginia Highland Atlanta real estate for sale range from approximately $500,000 to $2 million.

Local Activities & Shopping

Virginia Highland or “VaHi” includes a community of 7800 residents. The mostly residential area with eclectic eateries and shops. It is a destination for special events including Summerfest, one of the largest art festivals in the Southeast USA, Taste of the Highlands, and the annual Tour of Homes.
Virginia Highland’s interesting commercial areas are easily accessed through on street parking and nearby parking lots. This makes it easy to stop for a sandwich or run into a shop. Or visit notable landmarks such as the Adair mansion and The Colonnades for the Briarcliff Hotel/Briarcliff Summit Apartments.

Neighborhood History

Settled in 1812, the Virginia Highland suburb began as a streetcar stop a century ago. The 9 Mile Trolley brought people to the countryside here. Reminiscent of the streetcar era are intersections with gently curved streets.

The neighborhood expanded into the Virginia Highlands subdivision on the south side of town. Virginia Highland Civic Association has ushered and protected the charming neighborhood through the coming of freeways in the big city. The Neighborhood Planning Unit now keeps tabs on any similar projects and security. The Association provides a website for communications.

Neighborhood Schools

Students are served by some of the best Atlanta Public Schools at Springdale Park Elementary School, Inman Middle School, and Grady High School. Emory University is a couple of miles east of Midtown.

Neighborhood Streets

Virginia Highland extends from the east side of Piedmont Park to the southern edge of Midtown, the Center of Arts in Atlanta. It is bounded by Amsterdam Avenue on the north Briarcliff Road on the east, Ponce de Leon Avenue on the south, and the Beltline on the west.
