Neighborhood History

Grant Park is one of the most significant early Atlanta residential districts. It received its name from local railroad and streetcar advocate, Colonel Lemuel P. Grant, who donated 100 acres to the City of Atlanta for a park and recreation area.

The city later purchased more acreage for Grant Park. It established in 1883 and designed by the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, developer of beautiful parks and green spaces throughout the east and south. The neighborhood retains its lush landscaping. Zoo Atlanta began when George B. Gress, a local lumber merchant, purchased animals from a traveling circus to start a zoo in the park.

Many important events took place here, namely the Battle of Atlanta. The Atlanta Cyclorama, a major tourist stop, commemorates the battle. Fort Walker, the Atlanta Stockade, and Grant’s 1858 mansion, as well as the active St. Paul’s United Methodist Church still stand. On its northern edge, Oakland Cemetery is the resting place for many renowned Atlanta citizens.

To revitalize the historic park, the City of Atlanta Parks Bureau in 1996 determined to establish a Conservatory for fundraising and upgrades. The entire neighborhood has joined in the revitalization process.
